Get help from the Housing Advice team

If you are homeless or at risk of losing your home, you can seek advice or help from the council. You can submit a short triage form to us, informing us of your situation. This can be sent to us using the Chichester Homemove portal. Alternatively, you can contact us by phone or email.

What to expect after completing the triage form

The Housing Advice Team will need to assess your situation, to understand how we can help you.

A Housing Advisor will be assigned to you and will aim to contact you as soon as they can.

If you are legally homeless or threatened with homelessness, the council may owe you something called a duty, in line with legislation in England. This will also depend on if you are eligible for assistance (immigration and residence status).

Your residency history (local connection) will also be taken into consideration.

How the council can help you

Everyone's situation is different. In a situation where the council does not owe you a duty, we will give you some advice where we can.

If you are threatened with homelessness, the council may owe you a Prevention duty. We will work alongside you to prevent you from becoming homeless. This might be speaking with your landlord, or the person who has asked you to leave your home. We will try to keep you in your current home first, if safe to do so, before looking at other options.

If you are homeless, you may be owed a Relief duty. The Housing Advice Team will look at different options to help find you a suitable, safe and affordable home.

For either duty, the council will assess your housing needs and provide you with a plan to help you with your situation.

What we will need from you

After completing the triage form, you should look to gather the following (where relevant to your situation):

  • A form of Identification for all household members (passport, birth certificate, driving licence)
  • Any eviction notices, such as a 'section 21' notice or a letter telling you that you must leave your home
  • Evidence of money you have coming in (payslips from your employer, universal credit statements, bank statements)
  • Medical information (medical reports/records, prescriptions)
  • Proof of address (tenancy agreement, utility bills)
  • Landlord / Accommodation provider contact details
