Chichester District tree scheme
The Tree Chichester District scheme is part of the council's ambition to tackle climate change and support the district's wildlife and environmental resilience. The scheme utilises funding from HM Government's Shared Outcomes Fund. Since launching in January 2021, nearly 25,000 trees have been planted across the district. These were planted through 175 individual projects.
We have supported the following to plant trees across the district:
- residents;
- community groups;
- parish councils;
- schools;
- businesses;
- armers; and, landowners
The scheme is now in its second phase, thanks to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) awarding a total of £2 million from the Shared Outcomes Fund to continue the Trees Outside Woodland research programme. Chichester District Council has a share of this funding. We are using the funding to test new ways to boost tree numbers outside of woodlands and to strengthen biosecurity.
Phase 2 of the programme is once again delivered in partnership with:
- The Tree Council;
- Natural England; and,
- Four other local authorities
It aims to ensure the continued planting of new and healthy trees in our communities. These trees will provide many benefits for communities and the environment. In Phase 2, Chichester District is focusing on a particular theme of increasing connectivity between woodland habitats. This targeted tree planting provides full capital funding for tree planting in identified priority areas. The priority areas have been mapped across the district and you can check whether your land falls within one of these priority areas (opens new window).
Whether your land is within a priority area or not, please get in touch if you'd like to plant more trees in your area. We have several schemes available, and the wide variety of options will enable us to support many, diverse planting projects.
Chichester District Council has also been awarded a share of the Coronation Living Heritage Fund for the establishment of Community Orchards. If you would like more information, or would like to apply for planting support, please email our Tree Project Officer at treescheme@chichester.gov.uk.
Do I need to gain permission before planting trees?
Yes, you must obtain permission from the landowner to plant the trees, as all future responsibility for the trees will rest with the landowner. Chichester District Council, West Sussex County Council or Parish Councils can offer help when establishing who owns the land.
I only need one or two trees to plant in my small neighbourhood. What can I do?
West Sussex County Council also has a donate a tree scheme (opens new window) where people can apply for trees for their streets.
