They concluded that this would not be feasible or desirable for the following reasons:

  • The high cost which would be at least £10 million.
  • The length of ramps.
  • The impact on the environment in terms of the presence of a flyover within the Conservation Area.
  • The impact on people's homes in the area.
  • The impact on the look of the city and the views of Chichester Cathedral.
  • Potential flooding and air quality issues.
  • The negative impact of traffic being close to the city walls which goes against the Chichester Vision.

A lot of extra land would also be needed for highways use, and we would need to acquire much more third party land. This would result in less land being available for regeneration and the regeneration being economically unviable.
