A number of educational establishments were built during the nineteenth century. A Lancastrian boys' school was opened in Tower Street in 1810, followed by the girls' school at East Walls in 1812.
The Central Boys' School opened in 1812, in New Park Road, while the Central Girls' School did not have a permanent site until 1885, when a new building was constructed in Chapel Street. There were also a number of infant schools and private schools.
Higher education also developed in Chichester. The Theological College was founded in 1839. A teacher training college, the Otter Memorial College, was formed in 1850. This college, which became known as the Bishop Otter College originally trained male teachers, but in 1873 became a women's college. Later it took students of both sexes.
