The Corn Exchange

Many of Chichester's long-established trades, like brewing, wool sorting or food processing were originally supplied by local farming. During Victorian times transport improved which enabled successful local companies to send their products beyond the local area. Henty's brewery used steam wagons to deliver beer which Ebenezer Prior, woolstaplers, sent sacks of sorted wool by the railway. Shippams also used the railway to distribute their food products throughout the country and beyond.

Better transport, in turn, also enabled these growing companies to become less dependent on local supplies.
