Chichester Community Car ClubIntroductionIt is planned to start a Community Car Club in Chichester by July 2012 to offer an alternative to private car ownership. A community run project team has been formed to bring forward the Community Car Club. To help ensure the club meets the needs of the community, a short survey for residents and business employees has been distributed, the results of which are presented in the draft pdf scoping study document, A car club for Chichester City in 2012, which can be found unde Related documents. Community Car Clubs have been successful in many UK cities both larger and smaller than Chichester. They offer a modern route to car ownership in that the cars are shared between all car club members. The car club will have a nominal/joining membership fee and cars will be charged on an hour-by-hour basis. All maintenance, insurance and fuel costs will be included in the hourly/fuel rate. Further details about how car sharing works are given in the pdf document. The evidence from other cities suggests that members enjoy a significant saving in their annual motoring costs to the extent that some members give up their private car and rely solely on the car club for their motoring needs. Community Car Clubs particularly suit people who have the occasional need of a car, but don't find it essential to have a car available to them all the time. Purpose of the Community Car ClubThe purpose of our Community Car Club is to make modern, economic and clean cars available on demand to meet the mobility needs of the Chichester community. Our vision is to implement a car club which will knit into the fabric of our city and the daily lives of its occupiers. Our project is still in the early stages and we want to ensure that the cars, their locations and availability fulfils the needs of the community. We have sent out a short survey which we invited all residents and business employees to complete. The results of the survey are presented in the draft scoping study (A car club for Chichester City in 2012) pdf document, found under Related documents. Please note Chichester District Council is hosting this web page on behalf of the Chichester Community Car Club until such a time that the club is up and running. At that time the club will have its own bespoke web page, likely to be beyond November 2012. |
