News in brief - HydeMartlet and Hyde Plus support Greening Harting - Harting community garden

Introduction

The vegetable garden at Lower Culvers was officially opened on Saturday 10 April 2010. It was the culmination of a two-year project run by Greening Harting and HydeMartlet. The garden aims to increase the production of local food, introduce sustainable gardening techniques, and promote greater social awareness in the community.

After much consultation with local residents, HydeMartlet granted a Licence to Greening Harting. This allows them to use HydeMartlet land to create a Community Vegetable Garden to help the local community.

Work on the garden began at the start of the year, with a shed base prepared and new gates installed. A large conifer was also removed to allow the creation of the first bed ready for planting.

Run by volunteers, the garden will provide local stores with fresh produce. The remainder will be distributed to local residents and the volunteers. The group will also support the local school and playgroup in gardening projects.

The garden has been well received by local residents and is proving popular. HydeMartlet and Hyde Plus continue to support the group and look forward to a productive outcome for local residents
