Westgate Leisure Chichester celebrates 25 years!
Westgate Leisure Chichester celebrated its 25th birthday on Sunday (10 June).
As part of its anniversary year, Westgate is holding four charity events and a free open day on 22 July. You can take part in free swimming, badminton, squash, table tennis, bouncy castle, soft play, taster classes, and more.
Richard Minton, Operations Manager at Westgate Leisure Chichester, says: "I've worked here for 23 years and have witnessed many changes during that time. When the centre opened in June 1987 it offered eight classes. It now has over 100 a week, varying from Zumba to aqua gym, and spinning to 'easy does it' classes.
"What I love about Westgate is the people, the place and the variety. It is a community hub with a wide range of users taking part in everything from swimming classes for children, to sports clubs and classes to help people improve their health following operations."
Over the past 25 years the centre has welcomed 17.5 million visitors. As part of the anniversary year, Westgate has refurbished its gym, with 78 pieces of new Technogym fitness equipment. Over the years the centre has been extended and improved. In 2000 it was extended to increase the size of the gym, and a health suite area and crèche were added. In 2008, Café Ravenna was added. Plus, Westgate Leisure also has a new-look website featuring interactive pool and class timetables.
Councillor Heather Caird, Leader of Chichester District Council, says: "Westgate Leisure is a fantastic place that encourages people to look after their health and wellbeing and makes a real difference to people's lives. It's great to be celebrating 25 years of helping the local community, from those who have recently had surgery and helping them back on their feet, to helping those reach their target weight and fitness goals, and helping people with disabilities to get into the gym or pool, to supporting top athletes in their quest to reach their potential.
"As well as Westgate Leisure Chichester, there is now also Westgate Leisure Bourne. Both centres are home to lots of clubs and organisations providing educational, sporting and recreational opportunities to people of all ages. The centre is all about making a difference to the local community."
Kevin McCoy, Westgate Leisure Manager, who has worked at the centre since it opened, says: "During the past 25 years the centre has enjoyed welcoming both regular and new customers to participate in the ever expanding range of activities offered. Being at the heart of the community, the leisure centre is proud to support local schools, clubs and suppliers and offers a range of services to the public. There really is something for everyone to enjoy, be it a relaxing swim or a vigorous workout or even if you are just looking for a social catch up in a warm, friendly environment.
"We would like to thank all our current and past users over the last 25 years and hope you continue to support your local leisure centre."
