Wednesday market set to stay in Chichester precinct

Chichester's Wednesday market will remain in its new city centre precinct location after councillors backed proposals for it to stay.

Last August a year-long trial was approved to relocate the Wednesday market from Cattle Market car park to East Street and North Street. This was following feedback from traders who said the market was in serious decline and that remaining in the car park could spell its end.

In March a consultation was held inviting traders, businesses and members of the public to give their comments about the market trial.

Councillors have now agreed for the Wednesday market to continue in the city precinct location for two years. However, they said that improvements to the market's presentation needed to be made to ensure it is consistent with its heritage surroundings.

It was also agreed that during the special nine-day Christmas craft market organised by the Chichester BID (Business Improvement District), an alternative day be offered to the Wednesday market as the dates will coincide.

Councillor Tony Dignum, Leader of Chichester District Council, said: "Last year, traders were extremely worried about the decline in the market. During the precinct trial, they have reported much brisker trade.

"On the whole, residents said they thought the market livened up the city centre, but we know that among the business community there has been a mixed reaction to the new location. We have listened to all the comments and feedback we have received, and on balance we feel the market benefits the area as a whole and offers something different to shoppers.

"Having a successful market can help the city attract more visitors, which will in turn benefit the city's shops, cafes and tourist attractions, which helps the economy of the whole area."

The Wednesday and Saturday markets are operated by Bray Associates on behalf of the council.

The Wednesday market runs 9am - 5pm in East Street and North Street and the Saturday market runs 8am to 4pm in Cattle Market car park. The Wednesday market has space for up to 50 stalls and during the past year several new stalls have joined.
